Life Saving Mountain Bike Accessories

Mountain biking accessories come in all different forms and you do not need all of them. They also have the added advantage of reducing your bike insurance premium in addition to potentially saving your life.

If you are only just starting out in the world of mountain biking, then it is possible that you are currently feeling a little confused as to which accessories you need. With so many different accessories out there to purchase for mountain biking, it can often be difficult to know which ones will come in useful and which ones are better left alone.

Really you do not need every single accessory which has been brought out for mountain bikes. It all depends upon how often you use your bike and what you will be using it for. So before you purchase anything, it is a good idea to know what each of the different accessories does and whether it would be useful to you. Ideally you will want to purchase accessories which enable you to be as safe as possible so here you will find out about the best safety accessories available to purchase.

The Best Safety Accessories

If you are looking for the best safety mountain bike accessories then the first thing you need to look into is a helmet. This may sound obvious but there are some bikers who think that they do not need a helmet because mountain biking is different to ordinary biking. However, no matter which type of biking you take part in, a helmet is an essential accessory that every rider must wear. You could potentially suffer a very serious head injury if you were to fall off your bike or collide with something. So a helmet is not something that can be forgotten.

The next accessory which you may not have thought about is mountain bike gloves. Now most people wear gloves whilst they are riding because they keep the hands warm. However they do much more than that and they can in fact be a really good safety accessory. They help you to have a better grip on the handlebars which can be really helpful when you are going over rough terrain. They also provide a higher level of comfort which means that you can cycle for further without feeling the strain on your hands. Finally they can also help to cushion the hands when you fall. You always put your hands out to stop you when you fall and that can lead to nasty injuries. So wearing gloves can potentially stop these injuries from occurring.

Another important safety accessory is eye protection. The reason you need toprotect your eyes whilst out riding is because bits of debris can easily fly up and land in your eye. This can hurt a lot, cause an injury to the eye and the temporary loss of vision could make you fall off your bike too. So it is obviously a very serious worry if you were to get something in your eye whilst riding.

Overall the above mentioned are the main safety accessories that you will need for mountain biking. If you protect yourself as much as possible you will be less likely to receive an injury if you were to fall off your bike.

    Rating:
I’ve been using these grips for about a month now and my experience has been great. They are durable, they look great and they provide good grip. Assuming they are dry. I’ve found that when they get wet, they are very slippery on bare wet hands.

A cheap way to install them is with cheap hairspray at the dollar store. Any brand works, just spray the bar and a little bit inside the grip and slide it on. Set the grips and let it sit for at least half a day. The hairspray will have glued the grips in place.

Good quality, easy to install. But they are about inch longer than my old ones. It doesn’t really matter for me though.

I’m sitting here having just ordered my second Gyro Hex helmet. I’m typing with a broken bone in my elbow and a cracked rib, but thankfully a fully intact skull…

Living in Seattle we have a certain amount of rain, this summer slightly less so. So a couple of weeks ago on my way into work I wasn’t paying proper attention for a rainy Monday morning ride, hit a slippery patch on a corner at 15-20mph, my bike flipped and my 190lb self ended up plummeting head (and elbow) first into the asphalt…

I have never been so glad of a helmet in all of my life; it totally absorbed the impact (all be it by cracking into four parts, as expected). The actual structure of the helmet stayed together and gave my head all of the protection it needed as I slid along… The best 90 bucks I have spent all year

Initially I was going to buy a cheaper model as in 35 years of cycling I’ve never really had any need for the protection, but I’m glad that Matt black styling convinced me to pay the extra for a helmet which really did it’s job…

As well as the protection, I found this helmet nice and cool and very comfortable to wear on a 16 mile daily commute (for the 6 months until I broke it…)

  • Review by Ombligo for Giro Hex Mountain Bike Helmet, Matte Brown/Gold Shards, Medium
    Rating:
    Pros:

Air ventilation is truly excellent, fit is snug and comfortable, feels very light, the visor does not chatter in the wind, the helmet’s design is fairly stylish.

    Cons:

The straps often need to be pushed away from the back of my ears, the rubber part of “overmolded arm” on the RocLoc system inside the helmet interferes with the back tips of my glasses.

The helmet is used mainly for my daily commute. The RocLoc system makes the helmet fit well but at the expense of not being able to wear sunglasses comfortably. I wanted to try the Giro brand after I wore out my excellent Bell X-Ray helmet. When this Giro Hex wears out I will replace it with a new Bell X-Ray.

It’s nice to be able to find items like this at about half the retail price offered in most bicycle shops. After testing most helmets I found the HEX the most comfortable. I recommend this helmet over many more expensive models as it offers very adequate protection. It won’t however save your ankle!

    Good quality construction too.

  • Review by Austin Guy 2005 for Giro Hex Mountain Bike Helmet, Matte Brown/Gold Shards, Medium
    Rating:
Looks good, durable, and keeps my head cool during a long ride. My only complaint is I got a medium (I think I have a rather small head as my last helmet was a small (and I don’t think I resemble a bobblehead what so ever) and it barely fits on my head with the adjustment straps expanded to their fullest. So I would buy a large if I had to do it again (hard to try on before it shows up in the mail). Great helmet though!
