The Starting Formula Of A Bmx Bike
If you’re new to the whole BMX experience, you probably have got a ton of questions. Like, how do I know which bike is the best? Are some brands better then others, and which ones are the best? I’m sure the list goes on and on, and we understand that it can be frustrating. Thats what this article is all about!
First things first. Since BMX has many different types of bikes, you gotta decide where you’re gonna be bmx’ing. Are you gonna be romping on the dirt? Or are you gonna be cruising the streets? Maybe you’re planning on doing both. Not a problem with bmx bikes. You just gotta be concerned about upgrades at that point. So, with all these different ways to go with your bmx, lets get started.
We’ll start with the wheels, because the wheels are very important. First, you need a decent pair of rims. As a beginner, all your new tricks that you’re gonna be attempting are gonna play heck on your rims, which will lead to some bent rims, amongst other things. So, be on the look out for double wall rims with a cassette hub. While this is not super vital, it will save you some green in the long run. A factor that often goes unoticed has an effect on your braking abilities. That would be the color of your rims. If you got painted rims, it will cause the pad to have trouble stopping and slowing. Chrome rims, while more expensive, have the best breaking surface.
Of course, you can’t have a bmx bike without the frame. This is the main ingredient of your bmx formula, and cant be overlooked. Getting this part right will make upgrading your bike in the future easier, not to mention once you get used to your bike its hard to get a new one. It may sound silly, but you become one with your bike. The things you want to look at when it comes to picking your frame is the top tube length, where the brake mounts are, and whether or not your frame is a stock frame. When it comes to the top tube length, you really just want to make sure you fit, as that is really the only thing that matters in this regard. As far as brake mounts, you really just want to make sure you have them, as sometimes frames can come without them. And stock frames are best explained as frames that are sold with complete bmx bikes. Custom frames on the other hand are created special with a little more care, and therefore typically better.
If you can manage to get these things right, you are on your way to assembling a sweet bmx bike. And if you do these things right, it will make the other factors of your bmx bike a lot easier, such as further upgrades or repairs.

You’ve decided to take up the exciting and challenging sport of mountain biking. Unlike casual biking, you need much more than just a helmet to ensure that you have a safe ride as you hit the trails.
Mountain biking is such a popular sport that there is now a vast range of accessories for both men and women. Make sure you do a bit of research on each item you want to purchase to make sure you buy the best quality for the amount of money you want to spend.
Bike helmet
We may be listing the bike helmet as an ‘accessory’ but it really isn’t. It is a necessary piece of equipment. In mountain biking, it is not a question of if you’re going to fall, it’s a question of when. And when you take a header over your handlebars, having a secure helmet on your head could well save your life. Although you can buy most accessories second hand if you so desire, the bike helmet is something that you want to buy brand-new, and make sure that it fits your head properly. And if you do have an accident in which any damage occurs to the helmet, the wisdom is that you should purchase another one. One accident per helmet – that’s the rule.
Eye protection
Have you ever been riding on the road and been passed by a car that sends up a spurt of gravel at you? If any of that gets into your eyes, you have to stop immediately to clear your vision. If you’re on a trail heading downhill at a breakneck pace, and a baleful bee takes that opportunity to hit you in the eye, the following seconds could end up being very uncomfortable. Glasses or sunglasses are one solution, but the best method is to wear goggles. Whatever you get, make sure that lenses are non-breakable.
Hydration system
It’s common sense to bring a water bottle with you when you go out on a trail ride. It’s very easy to get dehydrated which brings your energy right down. However, in order to drink from your water bottle you have to take your hand off one of the handles, and there are sometimes when you don’t want to do that. A hydration backpack is a good solution. As a backpack you can put all kinds of necessary inside it, and when you need a drink you just reach over with your mouth to the bite valve and take a sip.
Mountain bike shorts
These days bike saddles are a lot more comfortable than they used to be. There are saddles made especially for women as well as men, and you can purchase gel-filled saddles that make the hours you spend on your bike a bit more comfortable. But you’ll also want padded bike underwear and padded bike shorts, just for extra comfort.
Mountain bike gloves
If you fall off your bike (or should that be, when), your hands will probably be the first thing to hit the ground – either a paved road, a graveled road, dirt, mud, bushes…all sorts of hazards that can rip up your hands unless they’re properly protected. Gloves serve another purpose as well, of course. If you’re heading down the trail your hands will get sweaty which could cause problems keeping your hands on your bike grips. Wearing gloves eliminates that problem.
Mountain biking shoes
These days there’s a shoe made for every sport under the sun, including that of mountain biking. The main difference in mountain bike shoes is the type of sole – designed for the different types of pedals out there: with clips or clipless. The clipless type of pedal requires that your shoes be fitted with special cleats. The shoes need to be durable and comfortable.
Trail repair kit
Regardless of what type of biking you do, it always makes sense to carry a bicycle repair kit with you. However, you can ‘get away’ with not carrying one if you ride on the streets of your city. You’ll just be a phone call away from someone who can come and help you if you have a flat, after all. It’s not that easy if you’re out in the woods and your cell phone doesn’t work. Always have a a multi-tool designed for bike repair, tire levers, and a patch kit for fixing flat tires. However, having a repair kit will do you little good if you don’t know how to use the tools! So make sure that after you purchase your kit you familiarize with each of the tools and how to use them! It’s easy once you know how.

The risk of injury is inherent in the sport of mountain biking, especially in the more extreme disciplines such as downhill biking. Therefore protective equipment is a must for every mountain biker. It can protect the rider against minor injuries, and reduce the extent or seriousness of major impacts. Helmets are not only considered as protective gear but is also a life saving device if you get into an accident. They’re usually well ventilated and lightweight so you wont even know that its there, make sure it is strapped snuggly. Biking could get more difficult when you have to reach and stretch farther for the pedals or handles, so you should consider that when you’re renting or borrowing from a friend. Make sure the parts can be adjusted to your specific needs.
Mountain trails can get very busy just like traffic on the roads. Mountain trails are open to other nature enthusiasts like hikers, nature photographers, and people going to their picnic destination or even horseback riders. A good courtesy to avoid collision and accidents is to call out your presence. Always remember to slow down when you’re turning on a blind corner. Make sure you’re not scaring the horses though, show consideration by dismounting your bike and taking a few steps downhill before getting on it again.
Colorado is home to many outdoor sports, but biking particularly have a special place. They’re host to state-wide races, bike festivals and longer and more interesting bike trails.
