No instructions in bag, but that was not a significant problem due to its simplicity. The tire would not hold air out of the box, so i had to fix the valve stem. As soon as i tightened the seat down enough that the seat would not slip down when sit upon, the bolt stripped out. Could have been a major problem had i not had access to a metal saw. Afterwards i had to buy a replacement bolt at the hardware store. One pedal crank continually comes loose and i have yet to find a solution. I would not recommend this product.

I've had this unicycle for almost 2 months now.
I got it as my first unicycle, and it was great to learn on. Assembly was easy. While learning, the only problem I had was if I had a significant fall and the seat hit the ground, it would get knocked out of alignment, even if the seatpost clamp was very tight. This could be solved by having a double bolt clamp, but it was more of an annoyance than a real issue. Later on, one of the cranks became squeaky and loose. I solved this by taking it off (you'd need a crank extractor tool), greasing the axle, and putting the crank back on VERY tight. It hasn't come loose yet, but if it does I might use loctite. The saddle is okay as long as you don't do any really long rides, if you really want comfort you'll need a better saddle. The tire tread doesn't last very long, but 24" tires are pretty cheap. Overall, I am satisfied with this unicycle given the very low price I paid for it. The problems I mentioned are easily fixable, and hopefully the makers of Avenir will take note of them for the next unicycles they make. If you want a first unicycle or just want a beater, this thing's a good bargain.

Got this for my husband as a fun new toy. No put-together instructions, but pretty self-explanatory. Husband is 5'9" and it just fits him, so consider the smaller size if you are shorter than that (or if, say, you are going to share the experience of learning to ride with your nephew). Have Fun!

My mountain bike needed new tires, the old ones were dry and cracked, and one had blown out through the sidewall. I decided that since I seldom ride in mud or on very loose surfaces, a smoother tread would allow me to ride along with lower effort and/or greater speed. Smooth tires on urban bicycles are nothing new, the Tioga City Slicker has been around for years, and probably serves as an inspiration for many other similar tires. I ordered the Kenda K838 based on the favorable reviews, and am very pleased. I ordered four tires, to upgrade two bicycles. They came in a box which was probably twice as large as it needed to be. As everyone else has mentioned, they are blackwall, not gumwalls as illustrated. Mounting the tires was no problem at all. I used a plastic tire lever to remove the old tires from the rims, and just popped the Kenda's on with my fingers, no tools needed. I inflated them and went for a ride. Note that while the tires can hold 60 psi, because of the larger volume of air contained, they work well at lower pressures, 35 to 40 psi for me, and provide a superior ride.The tread design and profile are based on combined features from successful motorcycle tires. The tread pattern is very similar to that seen on the Bridgestone Spitfire, with directional grooves to channel water to the outside edge of the tread surface. This gives low rolling resistance and complete silence....no humming or howling knobs on pavement. Constant pedaling is not necessary, as the low rolling resistance means one can pedal a bit, then coast or glide a long distance. They don't accelerate quite as easily as some narrower, lighter tires, say 700 x 28, but they do very well for a tire nearly 2 inches wide, and offer vastly better load capability, rim protection, flat resistance and a superior ride over irregularities. Bumps feel considerably "dampened", and the tires "float" undeflected over gravel patches instead of knifing in or skating around as a narrow tire might. Their triangular profile is based on designs used on Dunlop TT100 motorcycle tires and others. This means that when viewed from the front, the tire doesn't look "circular" round, but has a "rounded triangle" shape. When riding straight, the narrow "point" of the triangle contacts the road, giving a lower resistance. As the bike banks over for turns, the broad "flank" of the triangle gradually spreads across the road, giving a broader contact area and better grip. Owners of mountain bikes which are used more often on pavement and hard-packed dirt or gravel will probably enjoy these. They seem to be very well made and a good choice for their intended purpose.

First of all, this is a really good tire, you won't be disappointed. Note that it is black wall, not skin wall as shown in the picture, so the tire is all black - which I like better anyway. I use the bike for commuting, but where I live the roads aren't all that great so the size and capability of this tire works very well. The only issue I had was getting the tires on my wheel, they're extremely snug, so make sure you let ALL the air out of your tubes and be careful not to pinch the tube while getting the tire on. Also, I hope in the future the shipping company is more environmentally (and cost effectively) concious because I purchased two tires on the same day, they came in two huge, and separate boxes. I could have fit a filing cabinet in each on of the boxes - I thought that it was a waste of shipping material.

Whether you specifically buy the Swagman or not, my strongest recommendation is to get a bike carrier that attaches via a hitch and has the bikes sit on their wheels rather than hang from a bar by a strap. You just feel more confident that your bikes are secure. You feel more secure while you are driving and you feel more secure when you have to leave your car unattended (assuming you use a locking hitch pin and lock for the bicycle hook arms). If you are going to need a bike carrier more than once, buy one of this type. It's also the best option for women's bikes, which don't have the top bar. (I never trusted aftermarket bars that attached to the seat post and handlebars.)
Things to know (in general): > Don't go to your car dealership for a hitch. It's the most expensive option. You can get a hitch online for $150 or less and installation should be approximately $50 at any mechanic or auto body shop. The hitch can also be purchased at your local auto parts store, but will be slightly more. > You want ratcheting bike hook arms (like the swagman). It is so much simpler and faster. > You might need a can of Rust-Oleum to cover any places where the "protective powder coating" has been scratched off. A can is less than five bucks at any hardware store and you don't want to allow exposed bare metal, which can rust. Things to know (about the Swagman specifically) PROS > holds bikes quite tight and you do not worry at all that they will fall off. > The anti-wobble hitch pin works. > Would be difficult (but not impossible) to steal if you use both locking hitch pin and barrel lock for the bike arms. > Accommodates any size bike, even very small or women's bikes. > Folds up into very tiny space when not in use. Does not obstruct view out back window. > Easy to remove and re-attach with say... teenage boy strength required. > I can open the trunk on my Mazda 3 with it installed (so long as there is no bike on it). > Very nicely priced as compared to the models from Tule and Yakima. CONS > Sometimes the bike arm for one bike will be in the way of you installing a lock on the other bike arm. This would leave one bike unprotected. (This is my one star reduction) > The little rubber covers for the bike arm hook release lever like to slide off. This is a minor annoyance and does not warrant any reduction in the rating. OTHER > If your bikes' top bars are of similar height, you can likely get by with only one lock for the bike arms. If the bikes are the same height, the top bike arm will likely sit so close to the bottom that the bottom one could not be lifted high enough to remove the bike anyway. However, if the two bikes are of dissimilar size, you might need two locks. > Buy the locking anti-wobble hitch pin (sold separately). It's worth the piece of mind. Also buy a RATCHETING 7/8in crescent wrench to tighten it. > The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider seems almost identical to this product. Check out both before purchasing. -RM

I'm going to try a do two different ratings here, so bare with me.
BIKERACK (5 stars): the bike rack has some issues, that seem to be standard with these "import" models (Swagman/SportRack); however, that being said: the bikes are very well secured and very well protected. The ratcheting arm clamps go down tightly and stay there. No friction knobs to keep checking. Once you push them down, they stay there, and there is a place to put a pad lock on each for anti-theft security. The hooks are also padded and did not mark up the bikes even in the slightest. Due to the flexibility of the rack I was able to get a large men's bike and small woman's bike loaded and was able to arrange them so everything made good positive contact; hooks, wheel straps, etc.. Overall, I'm not the least bit worried the bikes will come loose during transit. Excellent design and so very easy to use. CONSTRUCTION (3.5 stars): this is where all these import models seem to fail; but it's due to their flexibility of use. The entire rack is made from 1-1/4" steel tube. This was done so you could use the rack on a 1-1/4" receiver hitch. With this light steel there is some inherent "flex" that allows the rack to wiggle. It would have been much better to use bigger steel that fit a standard 2" receiver, then have an adapter to go down to the 1-1/4" receiver. I'm going to use the rack a few more times as is, but I may make some modifications to it to help sturdy things up a lot more. The anti-wobble bolt, while a great idea probably works well on the 1-1/4" receiver, but with the supplied "adapter" it doesn't do a good enough job on the 2" receiver. In review of both Swagman & Sport Rack, they're made exactly the same, except for the following: Swagman has ratcheting locking support hooks which are excellent; the Sportrack uses a friction lock, don't like that. Both racks use metric hardware, so if you think you're going to replace a bolt with standard hardware, no dice, the threads are different, etc. The Swagman can also be used on Class I hitches and above, whereas the Sportrack is for Class II and above. Packaging of this Swagman rack, finish, easy of assembly and use were nice.

I have a 1-1/4" Class I hitch on my 2003 Toyota Camry, and the Swagman XTC2 is great for carrying my and my husband's mountain bikes. The XTC2 comes with an adapter for use with a 2" hitch that seems very sturdy--two pieces of metal that sandwich around the rack's 1-1/4" shank and are secured using the supplied bolt. I didn't need the adapter, though, for my Class I hitch. Putting it together and attaching it to my hitch took about 20-25 minutes. I bought Swagman's locking anti-rattle threaded hitch pin to use instead of the supplied threaded hitch pin. Adjusting the wheel hoops to fit both mountain bikes was not as easy as I thought it would be. Luckily, I only have to do that once since I'll only use it to carry our two bikes! My problem was positioning the bicycles so that the ratcheting bike hook that is in the lower position on the center post was far enough down on the center post so that the upper hook could in turn be pushed down far enough to securely hold down the top tube of the other bike (the padded bike hooks that ratchet to press down on and hold the top tube of each bike are situated one on top of the other on the center post, one hook pointing toward the trunk, the other pointing away from the trunk). I hope that makes sense. Because both of our mountain bikes have top tubes that slant downward from the head tube (at the base of the handle bars) to the seat tube, the only way (after much experimentation and adjustment) I could get both bikes secured was to position them facing in the same direction but with one further forward and the other further backward in relation to the center post. This way, the lower hook is at the lowest point of Bike A's top tube (close to the seat tube) and the upper hook contacts Bike B's top tube closer to the handlebars, where the top tube is higher. Again, I hope that makes sense! And maybe I'm the only one who had this problem, but all the pictures of the bike rack that I could find showed the front wheel hoops relatively close to each other and the back wheel hoops relatively close to each other, which is not how I had to adjust mine. And, I could not find clear pictures of the rack with two bikes on it. The reason I chose the XTC2 over the cheaper XC2 is because the XTC2 has a shank that angles upward from the hitch receiver, allowing extra ground clearance since the Camry is not very high off the ground (the XC2 appears to have a straight shank). So far, I have not had it scrape the ground, although I am careful to avoid really steep driveways. Once I got the wheel hoops adjusted, it's been a breeze. Place the bike wheels in the hoops, lower the ratcheting bike hooks (each hook has a place for a lock--not included--to prevent the hook release from being pressed), hook the supplied sturdy rubber securing straps over each wheel, and off you go--takes a minute or two at most! Watch out to make sure you don't scratch your car with a bike pedal. No more dangling bikes blowing in the wind like the standard bike rack design. The rack folds up easily so it can be placed in the trunk when not in use. It's made of very sturdy powder-coated steel and weighs 33 pounds according to Amazon; 34 pounds according to Swagman. All in all, I could not be happier with this purchase and recommend it to anyone looking for a two-bike, hitch-mount bike rack.
Added 5/13/2009: I forgot to mention that there were two small silver screws (about 1/2" long) included that were not mentioned in the assembly instructions0. I discovered on another website that one goes into the hole on the end of each arm to prevent the wheel hoops from sliding off the ends. 6/11/2009 Update: Took a 5-day, 1100-mile road trip with my husband and the two bikes. The bike rack performed like a champ, even at hubby's standard 80+ mph driving speed! Just wanted to note a couple of things: the road vibration does loosen the wheel hoop knobs, so I got in the habit of checking them regularly. The two round screws on the underside that attach the rack to the shank also loosened, but they only had to be tightened once (make sure you keep the supplied hex wrench easily accessible so you can tighten them--the wrench fits into the center of each hex screw). I did notice that one of the padded hooks became more difficult to remove--the hook release would not depress. We had to use a key to put upward pressure on the bottom of the release and wiggle it a bit. Once it was depressed, the hook was difficult to slide off. I am going to try WD40 to see if that helps. We only scraped the ground twice, both times on very steep driveways (where others had also scraped--you could see the gouges in the asphalt). All in all, a super enjoyable mountain biking trip made more enjoyable by this easy-to-use bike rack! |

i got these baskets off craigslist but these are exactly what i have, with all the same parts.
The biggest issue for me was successfully installing the baskets onto my bike. maybe if i wasn't just a regular ol commuter but a bike tech, or superman, i'd be able to get them on. i have an 18.5" Jamis commuter. the main problem is not the "legs" that attach near the wheel, but attaching the parts at the bottom of the seatpost. it has so far been impossible because once attached, the attachment prevents the back brakes from functioning. in the process of trying to attach, i've scratched up some paint on my bike. i went to a local bike shop and someone there thankfully devised a solution for $5. i love the baskets! thus, while i recommend the baskets, you should know that depending on your bike, you might run into a little trouble installing

This is a very high-quality piece made out of heavy steel wire, with great welds and zinc plating. It looks very sturdy and should support plenty of weight. It's also made in the USA, which is another bonus. However, this basket will require some time and effort effort to mount on most mountain bikes. If I didn't have a nice collection of fasteners, a power drill, and the tools required to cut bolts to size I probably would not have been able to mount this on my bike. It doesn't just bolt on and you shouldn't expect it to. I'm guessing it would work much better if you had the old-school cruiser style bike with fenders and chrome.
This is a quality product, but you might have to use some ingenuity when it comes to getting it on your bike.

I bought this for my wife's new bike. She delivers newspapers and was having a difficult time carrying all of her papers and as a result would have to make more than one trip to finish her route. Now she can do it all in one trip and the papers stay bundled. Having the baskets to the sides keeps the center of gravity down lower so the bike is more stable.Installation was a snap and the baskets (and the goods inside) stay completely secure. Maybe it's not going to run with the Kenda Navegal in a 1 on 1 competition, but for $9... seriously how can you go wrong? This tire has handled dirt, rocks, gravel, & hard-pack with ease. Mud is it's weakness but thats to be expected from this kind of tread pattern. Pressure is rated from 40-65PSI and even though I'm a heavier rider (200-205lb) I've been able to run 40-45lb without getting a pinch flat even while going down drops, jumping the bike, & hitting rock gardens at speed. For those who don't know, CST is the parent company of Maxxis so you know you're getting a quality tire.

The Passportes du Soleil Mountain Bike Race
The Passportes du Soleil is an epic mountain bike race in the huge Portes du Soleil region of France & Switzerland which heralds the start of summer and the opening of the lift system. It takes place over the last weekend in June, and has evolved from an earlier event known as the “Freeraid”.
Most riders don’t really treat the Passportes as a race (although you do get a number for the front of your bike) but simply a great day’s mountain bike riding. The event is massive – 2 days, 3 courses (30, 45 & 75 km) and 3700 riders. The classic trek of 75 km includes 12 ski lifts, 6500 m of total downhill, 500 m of total uphill climb.
What makes this event unique is the fact that it attracts a wide range of participants – from lycra clad cross country riders to armour clad downhill riders, and from beginners to experts. Everyone gets involved and rides the same course. True, the cross country riders tend to beat the downhill riders on the climbs, and for the real keen peddlers, there is also optional climbing sections. And true the downhillers tend to overtake the cross country riders when it comes to descending, and there are a couple of optional “free ride” sections. But overall, the race is a fantastic melting pot of all mountain bike styles and standards.
As for the course itself – it has to be one of the best in the world! It takes in some amazing panoramas on the Morgins and Champoussin sections with views of the Dents du Midi, the Dents Blanch and even Mont Blanc. There is some excellent steep and twisty single track down through the woods in Torgon. There are dedicated downhill courses used at Chatel and Les Gets. There is an epic descent from the top of Linderets down to Morzine and there are some great meandering cross-country sections on relatively easy 4×4 tracks.
Another excellent feature of this event are the fantastic refreshment stands located at regular intervals throughout the course. Large tables offer up a wide range of snacks and drinks, from energy/nut bars to cheese and ham, from energy drinks to beer and wine. It is always interesting to see who feels fit to tuck into the alcoholic drinks at ten in the morning, and then avoid them if you see them on the course!
The Passporte du Soleil is really an event for everyone. It has become so massive that it now sells out months in advance. However, if you visit the Portes du Soleil later on in the summer, it is possible to get a map from the local tourist office and cycle pretty much the whole route.

Classic trek – 75 Km The classic circuit is for purists: a long tour of the Portes du Soleil about 75km

Intermediate trek – 45 km 45km with one aim in mind; having fun
* approximatively 45km – 7 lifts
* 4000m of total downhill /300m of total uphill
* 4 resorts to start from: Châtel, Champéry, Morgins et Torgon.
* 4 refreshments points
Discovery trek – 30km For those who are quite good at mountain biking, but out on The Portes du Soleil’s tracks for the first ime…an ideal “breaking in route”
* approximatively 30km- 5 lifts
* 2200m of total downhill/ 200m of total uphill
* 3 resorts to start from: Avoriaz, Morzine et Les Gets
* 3 refreshments points

We ordered this bike because my son wanted a yellow bike. The bike is solid black with some yellow lettering !! I would've sent it back , but my husband put it together while I was gone . They need to udate the picture. As far as the performance of the bike , we'll know after Chrismas.Update- my son has used the bike and it is a very nice , quality bike. They still should update the product picture. Which is why I didn't give it 5 stars. |

Unlike road and Mountain Bikes, BMX bikes have evolved from garage made creations for a small racing niche into a huge industry and one of the biggest markets in cycling today. BMX bikes are built for fun and are so versatile there is almost no end to what can be done on them. The thrills you get from riding combined with the huge amount of exposure from events such as the X-Games and countless other competitions and races all around the world, make this one of the most popular styles of bicycling today.
BMX, or bicycle motocross, originated during the early 1970’s in Southern California. Kids started racing their bikes on dirt racetracks to imitate their favorite motorcycle racers. Most bikes were simple mass produced bikes that had been altered in garages or by small shops in the scene. With the release of the documentary On Any Sunday in 1972 the trend exploded in popularity all around the country. As the sport became more popular, riders soon found they could ride outside of the track and that they weren’t limited just to the dirt. Freestyle BMX, a popular discipline of the sport, where tricks and big air is the goal, exploded in the 1980’s and now rivals the original form of BMX racing in popularity and sales. Another faction of the sport to emerged focused on big air off jumps. Jump BMX bikes spun off from freestyle BMX and has a huge following today. The sport and industry was promoted with the help of very talented and individualistic athletes that showed the world what was possible on these simple one-geared bikes. Names like Dave Mirra, Matt Spinner, Matt Hoffman, Ryan Nyquist and Bob Haro can be found not only on BMX bikes but video games, clothing lines and a slew of other products and promotions.

As the industry grew, many large bike companies quickly caught on that there was money to be made in this market within the world of cycling. The kids, parents, bike shops and small time fabricators who were there at the beginning of the BMX movement began putting their expertise to use and started their own bike or component lines. Many of these rider-owned companies like Haro Bikes, GT and Mongoose were later bought out by goliath corporate bike companies. Today, it’s rare to find a large bike operation that doesn’t offer a line of BMX bikes or owns a BMX brand.
Types of BMX Bikes
Compared to other cycles like road and mountain bikes, BMX bikes are usually made with smaller frames and wheel diameters, they use platform pedals and are built with some of the strongest frames in the industry. These qualities make the bikes favorites amongst young riders and since they are so hard to break, parents too.
While all BMX bikes share similar qualities, the individual styles of the sport have forced evolution in the design, style and fabrication of different bikes. There are still multi-purpose BMX bikes or bikes that are very capable in more than one area of the sport, however there are definite differences amongst the three main styles.
Race: Bikes made for this division of BMX riders are the lightest out of all three. They are built to be strong enough to take abuse from an off road track but lightweight enough to give the racers every ounce of advantage they can get. Their knobby tyres are perfect for riding in dirt tracks, and like most BMX bikes they don’t come loaded with options. Simple, fast and lightweight is what you get with one of these.
Freestyle: These bikes are designed and made with tricks and stunts in mind. This includes a lot of park, street and ramp riding. This discipline of BMX is wildly popular because of the visually spectacular feats riders can pull off. Even people who don’t bike can’t help but to stop and watch these riders do their thing. The adrenaline and a constantly rising bar keeps riders always coming back for more. The bikes themselves are different than other BMX bikes in that they have smooth tyres and come with a wide range of unique accessories that help the rider in doing specific tricks.
Jump: BMX bikes in this category are built and designed with extremely strong frames and wheels to withstand the impacts that are inflicted on them day after day. They are heavier than other BMX bikes because of this, but are by far the most durable. They are perfect for off road riding down rough trails and their knobby treaded tyres are designed for this terrain.
What bike you decide on in the end depends on what you plan on doing with it, your experience level, your budget and many other factors. Try several bikes out and see what feels good, talk to riders who know good bikes from bad and do your research. BMX bikes range from the affordable to super high end, so make sure you’re getting the right bike for you or you might end up with a lot of money invested into the wrong bike.
